Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that causes blurred or distorted vision at any distance. This condition occurs when the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) or the lens inside the eye has an irregular shape. Instead of being perfectly round, the cornea or lens is more oval-shaped, causing light to focus on multiple points on the retina rather than just one. This leads to images appearing blurred or stretched.

At Sri Nirwana Netralaya Eye Hospital, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive and advanced care for astigmatism, ensuring that you receive the most effective treatment to correct your vision and enhance your quality of life.

Diagnosis and Evaluation Astigmatism is often diagnosed during a routine eye exam. Our experienced ophthalmologists use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to assess the extent and type of astigmatism. This includes a thorough examination of the cornea, lens, and overall eye health to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Treatment Options for Astigmatism At Sri Nirwana Netralaya, we offer a range of treatment options tailored to the individual needs of our patients:

  • Prescription Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses

    • Eyeglasses: Custom-made eyeglasses with special cylindrical lenses can correct the irregular curvature of the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina. This is the most common and straightforward treatment for mild to moderate astigmatism.
    • Toric Contact Lenses: Unlike regular contact lenses, toric lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism. These lenses have different optical powers in different orientations, compensating for the uneven shape of the cornea or lens.
  • Refractive Surgery

    • LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis): LASIK is one of the most popular surgical options for correcting astigmatism. During the procedure, a precise laser is used to reshape the cornea, correcting its irregular curvature and allowing light to focus correctly on the retina. This procedure is ideal for patients with mild to moderate astigmatism who are looking for a long-term solution.
    • PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): Similar to LASIK, PRK reshapes the cornea using a laser, but without creating a corneal flap. This option is suitable for patients with thinner corneas or those who prefer a flapless procedure.
    • LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy): LASEK is a variant of PRK that involves lifting the thin outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) and then using a laser to reshape the cornea. This procedure offers an alternative for patients with specific corneal conditions that make them ineligible for LASIK.
    • Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK): This surgical procedure involves making small incisions in the cornea to relax the steeper areas, allowing it to become more rounded. AK is often combined with other refractive surgeries to enhance the overall correction of astigmatism.
  • Advanced Intraocular Lenses (IOLs)

    • Toric Intraocular Lenses: For patients undergoing cataract surgery who also have astigmatism, toric IOLs are an excellent option. These lenses are designed to correct both cataracts and astigmatism in a single procedure, providing clear vision without the need for additional corrective eyewear.
