Blepharitis

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelids, particularly at the base of the eyelashes. This condition can cause discomfort, irritation, and redness and is often associated with other eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome and conjunctivitis. Blepharitis can affect people of all ages and is typically a chronic condition that requires ongoing management.

Types of Blepharitis There are two primary types of blepharitis:

  • Anterior Blepharitis: This form affects the outside front edge of the eyelid, where the eyelashes are attached. It is often caused by bacteria or dandruff from the scalp and eyebrows.

  • Posterior Blepharitis: This form affects the inner edge of the eyelid, where it meets the eyeball. It is commonly associated with dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for secreting oils that form part of the tear film.

Causes of Blepharitis Blepharitis can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Bacterial Infection: Staphylococcus bacteria are a common cause of anterior blepharitis.
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis: A skin condition that causes dandruff and greasy skin, leading to inflammation of the eyelids.
  • Rosacea: A skin condition that causes redness and swelling on the face and can affect the eyes and eyelids.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions to eye makeup, contact lens solutions, or environmental allergens can trigger blepharitis.
  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction: Blocked or inflamed meibomian glands can lead to posterior blepharitis.

Symptoms of Blepharitis Blepharitis can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Redness and Swelling: The eyelids may appear red, swollen, and irritated.
  • Itching and Burning: Patients often experience a sensation of itching or burning in the eyes.
  • Crusty Eyelids: Crusts or flakes may form at the base of the eyelashes, particularly upon waking.
  • Dry Eyes: Blepharitis can contribute to dry eye symptoms, such as a gritty feeling in the eyes.
  • Tearing: Paradoxically, blepharitis can cause excessive tearing due to irritation.
  • Blurred Vision: In severe cases, vision may be temporarily blurred due to the accumulation of debris on the tear film.
